Indian Hockey Team Captain Rani Rampal visits Khalsa College Campus

Shining Hockey star and present Captain of Indian Women Hockey team, Rani Rampal today visited historic Khalsa College campus here. She was accorded a warm reception by the management and staff and the budding hockey players of Khalsa Hockey Academy.  Upbeat over Silver Medal win in the recently concluded Asian Games in Jakarata, Indonesia, Rani said the Indian Women Hockey was up for a bright future as the new talent is being nurtured at the national level. ``Indian girls are all set to show their prowess at the upcoming world events", she said with the enthusiasm writ large on her face. In the city to pay obeisance at Golden Temple, she made the point to visit the College which have produced Hockey legend of the likes of Balbir Singh Senior. She was happy that the management has been running the Khalsa Hockey Academy to train the young hockey talent under the guidance of Draunacharya Award winner national level coach Baldev Singh.  ``You are in safe hands. I was nothing and it is Baldev Singh who trained me into a hockey star. He is my Guru and God to me”, said Rani clad in white and black as she shared tips with the budding players of the academy, which is a brain child of Khalsa College Governing Council (KCGC) honourary secretary Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina.

She was given a floral welcome and traditional reception on arrival by the young hockey players on campus. Virtually a rags-to-riches story, Rampal who is inspiration to the new talent said her journey began in shanty home of her father in Shahpur in Haryana and today she was leading the India’s team. Aiming for the next World Cup, she shared the tricks of the trade with the young girls and motivated them to put their best foot forward.  "When women win laurels, it fills the whole country with pride and we need more of that to happen", said she referring to the young budding girls of the academy as her younger sisters, she went on to offer her help to the academy whenever need be. ``I am always there to coach my sisters here”, she said. 

Chhina earlier said Punjab government needs to take a leaf out of Haryana’s success story by offering government jobs and attractive cash incentives to motivate its players. He emphasized on the dire need to upgrade and maintain sports facilities at the grassroots and maintain the sports infrastructure. He also said that we should have coaches like Baldev Singh whose dedication and hard work  was there to see.

 Chhina congratulated Rani for her stellar performance at the Asian Games 2018 and said that Rani's success story will definitely boost the morale of all the girls from humble background to do well. He went on to add that it is always an effort of the management to provide every kind of opportunity to the students of institutions running under the Council and the sole reason for establishing the Hockey Academy is to provide these girl players free education and consistent training under the best coaches of the country to horne their skills to perfection.
